New York - Sail for America

September, 2002

We sailed from Hampton, Virginia to New York hoping to arrive for the Sail for America event.  During our trip, we had a visitor which Rankin served a gourmet meal of flies a la cart.  I think everyone had a good time.

Rankin and his new friend ... we called him "Bird"

On September 14th, we arrived in New York just in time for Sail for America.    Though the picture is not up to par ... it was quite an impressive display of support ... again sorry for the quality of the photo.

Sail for America        Look closely to see hundreds and hundreds of sail boats in Hudson Harbor

While in New York, we were also able to see the crew from the Around Alone.  This is a single-handed round the world race which left out of New York.   It was exciting to see the start of this race from the Heart of Texas.

The beginning of alone around the world race with several spectator boats seeing them off        A man beginning his journey alone around the world

While in the "Big Apple", we visited with Sherie (Rankin's beautiful, younger sister), Bob (her fabulous husband), and Dash (their intelligent and independent daughter) and had a splendid time.  Thank you Bob, Sherie and Dash for being such excellent hosts ... you know this means we'll be returning.  To continue, we went to see a few sights (i.e.  Empire State Building, Grand Central Station, etc.), a show ("Rent") and captured a pretty good photo of the city.

Next, on to Long Island Sound for a fantastic weekend of sailing with family and friends!!
