April, 2003 Norman's Cay has a shady, yet interesting, past. In the 1970s most of the island was purchased by Carlos Lehder, a key German-Colombian drug lord who brought in armed thugs, drove out most of the residents, and turned the cay into a landing strip for illegal cargoes. The government turned a blind eye until an NBC documentary blew the lid in 1983. Lehder now idles in jail and many of the residents have returned. We found this interesting and at least worth a stop. Rankin snorkeled on a DC-3 drug-running plane which sits rusting in shallow water, having missed the runway. Apparently, everything is still pretty much in tact (i.e. engines, seats, etc.). Shortly after snorkeling around the plane, we headed to Allan's Cay. |
