February, 2003
After a few days in San Salvador, we decided to head out for Rum Cay on Monday, February 17th which is about 30 miles southwest from San Salvador. We arrived at Rum Cay the same day and anchored the first night in Flamingo Bay surrounded by coral. It was quite exciting inching our way into the Bay surrounded by coral heads and seeing a nearby sunken ship. We made it without any issues, and it was a magnificent location. When we arrived, we kicked back and lounged around. The next day we took the dinghy out and went snorkeling. We saw a barracuda, some extremely colorful fish (we're still learning the names) and a reef shark about 5-6 feet long (we do not need to learn the names of the sharks .... got it down). Needless to say, I saw it, promptly turned around, swam back and jumped into the dinghy. Rankin looked around and then figured out pretty quickly why I left so he also headed back to the dinghy. Though Rankin stayed in the water and kept his eye on the shark, I finished snorkeling by poking only my head in the water and my derriere in the air. Not a pretty picture ... but funny (No, there are no photos of that sight).
The next night we anchored at Port Nelson which was a pretty rocky stay, so we stayed the remaining two nights at Sumner Point Marina waiting for a break in the weather. During our wait, we took a short walk around the island .... mainly to try and locate internet access, and found the people around town very hospitable. Rum Cay is a small picturesque island with approximately 50 residents and apparently there are herds of wild cattle (though we didn't get to see any). If you want solitude, this is the perfect island to visit. For us after a few days, it was time to sail and explore another island. Our next choice was Clarence Town on Long Island.
