February, 2003
After some exploring and a few repairs, everything was ready to go and we finally left Abaco, Bahamas, on Wednesday, February 12th (three months after we arrived). We had a 40 hour sail (a day and two nights) and arrived in San Salvador, Bahamas on the morning of Friday, February 14th. This island is well known for the scuba diving (wall dives) and fishing. It's also the first island in the new world where Christopher Columbus landed in 1492 (but there is still some debate about that information). It's a fairly small island with about 1,500 people and about 250 of them work at the Club Med. Yes, there's a Club Med on San Salvador ....surprise, surprise. The people are very, very nice and they have a remarkably carefree, relaxed way about them. Even though we didn't go scuba diving (I am not certified YET and Rankin misplaced his dive card and is working on getting it replaced), we always stayed busy.
On Valentine's Day, we viewed a spectacular sunset on a secluded beach .... it was breathtaking!! Then the next couple of days we just relaxed and explored the island. We wanted to see Dixon Lighthouse located on the east coast cliff. It is a genuine old-fashioned 72 foot British lighthouse (circa 1887) with a kerosene light, caretaker's cottages and spectacular vista. So, after a 10-12 mile bike ride (one way), we finally arrived at the lighthouse though we were unable to climb the numerous steps to the top .... just kidding. Actually, the lighthouse was beautiful, though I wouldn't lean against the lighthouse because you'll get white chalky stuff all over your clothes (things you learn from experience). The return ride was a nice trip and for some reason it seemed shorter. What a way to get around town!! We promptly headed for the pub after our bike ride and had at least one beer.
After failing to persuade the sports fisherman to give us a few measly fish (mahi mahi, tuna, or whatever), we decided it's time sail away and head for Rum Cay.
