July, 2004
After a nice, leisurely sail, we arrived in Bequia around noon on Friday, July 9th. Bequia is one of many islands which make up the Grenadines, and, from what we've read, it has some very interesting sites. For example, the Moonhole homes which the original was built under a natural arch known as "Moonhole". The other homes grow out of the rocks without straight lines or right angles. Bequia is also a location to purchase whale bones or teeth. This island has an active whaling station and they are permitted to take four whales a year. If/when they do catch a whale, which from what we read is rare, it is towed to Petit Nevis for processing. Though we didn't see everything, we did squeeze in a few activities. We took a quick tour around the island with friends stopping by the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary and an old sugar plantation which is now a pottery studio. We joined fellow cruisers on a beautiful while beach for hors d'oeuvres and cocktails. We attended a wonderful gathering with fellow cruisers known as Bloody Mary Sunday on Adventure, a Shearwater vessel owned by David and Charly. You can probably guess what beverage was served. We also had excellent pizza at Mac's Pizzeria. They have lobster pizza that we hear is wonderful, unfortunately, it wasn't available during our stop. We also went on a day sail with Centime and a couple we met from Guyana, Dan & Alehia Daley. It was his first sailing experience and Centime (Walt & Pat) were very gracious and offered their boat. So, we spent part of the afternoon on a beautiful day sail. It's fun sailing on another boat ... we'll definitely have to come back!! We had a great time at Bequia, but it was time to get moving again. So, on Wednesday, July 14th we set sail for Tobago Cays. If you would like to catch up on the latest travels, take a look at What's Happening. Don't forget ... keep coming back. |
