June, 2004
On Sunday, June 20th, we hoisted anchor from Guadeloupe, set sail for Les Saintes and anchored near the largest island, Terre D'en Haut. The Saintes have been French since shortly after they were colonized, and have long supported a small community which used to rely almost entirely on fishing. In the last decade, tourism has become a major industry. The next day, we browsed around town a bit, but almost all the shops were closed (BOOO). We later heard it was a holiday, so that explains why everything was closed. So, we took advantage of the off time and relaxed for a bit. On Tuesday, June 22nd, we rented motor scooters with Carl and zoomed around the island. Carl has been to Les Saintes many times and took us all over the island, so we could capture the beauty of the island and share it with you. Les Saintes was wonderful and has something for everyone ... forts to boutiques ... did I mention boutiques. That night we kicked back and relaxed and had cocktails with some friends. Geoffrey & Kath from Gladys, Rick & Debbie from Miss Heidi and Walt & Pat from Centime. We met Gladys in St. Martin while trying to sell our goods at a local flea market. Miss Heidi is also from Houston, Texas and was a member of the same yacht club (small world, huh). We also saw them in Hope Town, Bahamas last year, but didn't have a chance to spend any time together. Centime, we met during our time in Luperon, Dominican Republic and ran into them again in BVI. It was very nice to see everyone again, and I believe everyone had a great time. Well, it was time to get moving again ... we needed to head south for hurricane season. So, after only a few short days at Les Saintes, it was time to sail off to Dominica. Take a look at What's Happening to see the latest. Don't forget ... keep coming back. |
