On Wednesday, September 29th, we left Grenada around 4:30 p.m. and motored down to Trinidad with three other vessels, Tookish, Shadow Line and Nellie Bell. We stayed close together in a diamond shape pattern during the 14 hour night passage. We maintained regular contact with each other and the Trinidadian Coast Guard until our arrival in Trinidad. Around 8 a.m. with the help of our fellow cruisers who came out to meet us, we slowly motored into Chaguaramas. Trinidad was jam packed with boats and cruisers. We saw many old friends and met many new cruisers. We participated in the Hindu festival of Divali which is also called the Festival of Lights. This is the largest Hindu festival on the islands and celebrated on what is said to be the darkest night of the year. Celebrants often invite family and friends to share a sumptuous vegetarian meal and at dusk, everyone joins in lighting and placing the Deyas around their home and yard. Before our delicious vegetarian dinner, we enjoyed a peaceful reception in the temple which included both local music and dance. Then we leisurely strolled through a nearby neighborhood appreciating the beauty and effort involved in displaying the Deyas. Below are a few photos of this beautiful event.
