September, 2006
On Wednesday, September 27th, at around 12:30 p.m., we caught a bus from Mendoza, Argentina, to Santiago, Chile, which took us along the same route we had traveled the day before during our Alta Montaña tour. We only stayed in Santiago a day because it was just a stopping point for us while traveling to Punta Arenas (Chile) for our Mar Australis adventure cruise. We stopped at Plaza de Armas which is the epicenter of Santiago and is where the magnificent Cathedral is located. The Cathedral is a combination of Neoclassical and Baroque styles, with its orderly columns and pediment and its ornate bell towers. It bears the mark of Joaquín Toesca, who was brought from Italy in 1780 to oversee its completion. The Plaza de Armas was filled with many interesting buildings and statues. Unfortunately, our time was limited which meant we were not able to see many of the sites the city offered. We left Santiago the next day and caught a flight to Punta Arenas, Chile for our cruise through the Beagle Channel and around Cape Horn. If you would like to catch up on the latest travels, take a look at What's Happening or follow us to Punta Arenas, Chili. Don't forget ... keep coming back.
