Los Roques (out island of Venezuela)

January, 2006 to February, 2006

On New Years Day (January 1st), we arrived in Los Roques and dropped our hook in Francisquis where we rested for a bit and then had our friends Pat and Walt (Centime) over to toast the new year.

Anchored in Francisquis

Upon our arrival in Francisquis, we were quite surprised by the large number of boats and the tourist attractions (like kite boarding).  Well, when in Rome ... so we tried our hand at kite boarding, but we found that being dragged through the water by a huge kite just wasn't our cup of tea.  We now can appreciate how difficult this sport is to master ... good kite boarders make it look very easy, but it's anything but easy.

Rankin all geared up with the big kite in hand ... ready to be dragged through the water

There are many islands which make up Los Roques and we cruised and toured as many as possible during our almost three week visit.  We explored the main island of El Gran Roque which is the only island with a village on it.  There are no cars and the streets are sand.  We enjoyed touring around during our check-in process.  We forgot our camera so thanks so much to Pat and Walt on the sailing vessel Centime for these photographs.

Welcome to Los Roques    This town is filled with brightly colored buildings.

Streets are sand    Pat was nice enough to take my picture

As we walked all over town checking in to customs, immigration, etc., these little puppies followed us from place to place.    Lenny from Wind Dancer locked up?? Never, he's waiting to check in.

Another highlight while cruising around Los Roques was our visit by dingy to the islands of Los Canquises and Selensqui where we could stare in amazement at wild flamingos and baby pelicans.  This time we didn't forget to take our camera, but our friends Todd and Lynn from Blue Marine take beautiful photographs and were nice enough to share these pictures with us.  Thank you Lynn and Todd for the great photographs.

Our time in Los Roques went quickly.  It was now time for a passage to St. Croix, so we sailed back to Margarita, Venezuela for a month and then headed to St. Croix.  If you would like to catch up on the latest travels, take a look at What's Happening otherwise click on the link to St. Croix.  Don't forget ... keep coming back.
