Honduras - La Ceiba

January/February, 2008

We left Guanaja on Monday, January 14th around 5:30 pm slowly navigating our way out the channel avoiding a few reefs and leaving Guanaja behind.  Our stop in Guanaja was very short but we hope to return one day soon ... it's a lovely island with nice, friendly people and an excellent introduction to Honduras.  We had a pleasant uneventful night sail as we jibed our way to La Ceiba.  We had clear weather until the morning when we experienced a light refreshing shower ... of course, it was my watch, however, that morning Rankin was greeted by a beautiful rainbow.

Rankin on watch after the rain

The wind died, our speed dropped to 1 knot and we decided we'd probably have to motor the remainder of our trip to La Ceiba (about 2 hours).  We arrived in Lagoon Marina around 9 am and were greeted by friends and fellow cruisers whom we hadn't seen in months.  Rita, the owner of the marina, assisted us with docking the Heart med moor fashion.  Before our arrival, we had heard many wonderful things about this marina and it's beautiful landscaping, friendly staff, nice apartments, and the swimming pool.  It was all true and more.  The purpose for our marina stay was for Rankin to attend the wedding of close friends in Alcapulco, Mexico (Congratulations Lani and Dan) and for a bottom job and boot stripe repair on the Heart.

We stayed at Lagoon Marina for a little over a month ... over a month you're probably wondering what the heck took so long.   Well, it took a while for the paint we ordered to arrive from the States. In the meantime, we had a chance to catch up with friends and enjoy a few good restaurants.  I did a little computer work here and there and also took two weeks of Spanish classes ... exhausting!!  Rankin made time to play a few rounds of golf.    After our Costa Rica trip, we never pass up an opportunity for zip lines, so a group of us took a quick horseback ride up a muddy path to the canopies and then zipped through the forests.  Afterwards, we drank cocktails and relaxed in the natural hot springs.  During our stay in La Ceiba it was SuperBowl Sunday, so we watched an excellent Super bowl game this year at a restaurant called ExPats.  After a few delays, the paint arrived and the Heart was hauled out on Friday, February 1st.  The boatyard crew did a pretty good job replacing the boot stripe and painting the bottom.  On Friday, February 15th, the Heart of Texas was gently placed back in the water and we returned to the marina.  We spent the next four days moving back onto the boat, provisioning, and stowing everything.  Now, we are ready for our next adventure in Cayos Cochinos.   If you'd like to view a slideshow of our experience in La Ceiba, just click HERE!!
